FACULTY SHOW 2009: Recent Work by SRJC Faculty
November 5 - December 12, 2009
Out of a field of intense reds emerges the abstract interior of a bar or café space, adorned with pictures or mirrors, a few lanterns, a door, and a single table. The elements are vehicles for exploring various types of spatial representation. A rendered picture plane from a John Singer Sargent portrait is juxtaposed with a roughly styled early modernist tabletop. Set against a shifting color field, the effect creates a pulsating space in which the viewer is confronted with an open-ended riddle.
For core subjects, I focus on the fundamental elements involved in making an image. Building a vocabulary of visual elements and learning to use it effectively takes lots of practice coupled with specific guidance. It is also essential to offer exposure to historical and contemporary issues of art. This further broadens our understanding of what art is while illuminating possibilities of what it can become.
The exercises in my classes are designed to build upon each other, furnishing students with a visual and conceptual toolbox with which to develop their own artistic vision.
